Many people think of Botox primarily as a cosmetic treatment to lessen lines and wrinkles, but it is also an effective treatment for sufferers of chronic migraine headaches.
At Rushmore Pain & Medicine, we use Botox as a preventative treatment for migraines. During treatment, multiple Botox injections are given in targeted spots across the patient’s head, neck, and shoulder area. Once the effectiveness of the treatment has been determined, patients are typically placed on 12-week treatment schedules to lessen the frequency and severity of future migraine outbreaks.
Migraine headaches cause an intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in an isolated area of the head. This pain is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to both light and sound.
