Trigger Point Injections, or TPI

At one time or another, we’ve all had a painful knot, or trigger point, that occurs when a muscle refuses to relax. Here at Rushmore Pain & Medicine, we can treat these painful knots with trigger point injections, or TPIs.

The procedure involves a small needle inserted directly into the patient’s trigger point. The injection may contain an anesthetic, saline, a corticosteroid, or a combination depending on the patient and severity. After the injection, the trigger point becomes inactive and the pain goes away.

According to the National Association of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists, myofascial pain often results from muscle injury or repetitive strain. When stressed or injured, muscles often form trigger points, like contracted knots, that cause pain and tightness.
